Here's the scam: You receive a call on your cell phone from area code 473. The caller ****s up after a single ring, hoping you'll call back. And if curiosity gets the better of you and call back, you've been scammed. (In another scenario, the caller stays on long enough for you to answer and then ****s up, enticing you to return the call.) Forbes reports that while area code 473 appears to be a domestic phone number, it is not. It is actually for the islands of Gre***a, Carriacou and Pe***e Martinique. Even though the area code uses country code 1 like the United States, numbers placed to 473 are international calls--and can be very pricey. How much? The rate can exceed $20 for the first minute. This isn't the only area code pulling this scam. Others include 242, 246, 264, 268, 284, 345, 441, 473, 649, 664, 758, 767, 784, 809, 829, 849, 868, 876 and 869 What can you do to protect yourself? • Do not let curiosity get the better of you. Do not return calls from numbers you do not recognize, no matter what the area code. •****ume the call is not important or is a scam if the caller doesn't leave you a voice mail or text message. • If you fall for the scam, contact your phone provider immediately. You may be able to get the charges waived.

North Carolina, Raleigh SCAM Got two call , one jan 29th and Feb. 1st. Did not answer either or call them back. Saw story on news today saying if you call back its $20 then $9 or more a minute and they will keep you on the phone as long as possile. Hitting Raleigh NC at this time.

From what I learned online, definitely a scammer. Some heard screaming and moaning when they called back (?) and some heard about "exciting men". Either way, the consensus is that you will be charged while you are on hold - some comments claiming as much as $9/min. TLDR: Do NOT answer, do NOT call back.

If you're getting calls from Antigua/Barbuda DO NOT answer or return the call. I just read an article about these phone scammers and they charge bills and fees to your service provider. Somehow they can do this and not get charged because they're oversees. So be careful!
