Received a call from AMER ACCEPTANCE (I****ume it's "American") and they left a message on my ma****e. Persons name is Jessica and says they need to verify. employment. From what the other people have said in this forum, This scam sounds familiar and I've delt with this type of scam before. What they do is buy up bad debt (stuff that is very old and usually beyond the statue of limitations) for pennies on the dollar. Then they will harass the person who owes the old debt and try to get a "settlement" from them for $200-500 so****ing on that line. They will tell you you owe thousands from interest and leagal fees. What ever they can get from you is almost all profit for them since they paid very little for that account. This is all a scam and they have no legal ground to stand on. *****BUT***** you have to be careful. DON'T PROMIS THEM ANYTHING AND DON'T SEND THEM ANY MONEY AT ALL. If you send them anything at all than you are then acknowledging that the debt. is yours. At that time they then may have a legal right to collect the interest, legal fees, etc. and you could end up legally owing them thousands of dollars. They make there money by gambling that most people are going to be un aware of the laws and their rights and be frightened into giving them the “settlement” money. Even if they took you to court (which they won't because it would cost them money)the judge would throw it out for statue of limitations (usually max 4 years from last payment on the account) If you do send them some money, then you are then also hooked for the rest of it,(intrest, leagl fees, etc.) and at that point there is not much you can do about it because you have, in a since, admitted to the debt. The best thing to do is just say that your not that person and you don’t owe anything and leave it at that. If they keep bothering you then you have grounds for class action.
