Called demanding information about some guy, tried to figure out my relation to this guy, insisting it was Medicare. If it was Medicare, they would already have his info!

This is a scam number. Verify this while I had them on the phone. When told I was communicating with Cap One to verify they were who they said they were, they immediately ***g up. Called them back and they would not answer. Had new cards issued anyway just to make sure. You can believe they are real if you want to. But be warned this number is for scammers.

Called and left voice mail msg for someone I never heard of- at 7:30 AM! I never had or used any Capital 1 cards either, and even if I did, this number would not have been known to any credit card company in the first place; only my business mgr's office number is ever used for ALL credit card forms. Horrible company, regardless.

This is the fraud department from Capital One. It IS a legit number. It's actually listed on the Capital One site as the Fraud Department's number.

Wanted to verify information but reached me at my parents number, which I never provided in my credit card application.

I've received 4 missed calls (without voice messages) since yes****ay from this number. I don't have a Capital One credit card, so I can't imagine why they would be contacting me.

I received three phone calls from this number and an email all in within a 24hour period. - I did call the number back and got through to a live person. She was able to pull up my account WITHOUT me giving her anything other than my first and last name. She even verified the current amount that was owed on the card and the the charge that was supected for fraud. This phone number is ligit and it IS Capital One's Fraud department number which does use an automated system. I simply stated to her that I did not want to receive anymore phone calls and that I would check my account and contact Capital One if I had any issues regarding charges. Hopefully this solves the problem. Others may want to try this technique also to eliminate these annoying calls.

They said I might have had fraud on my credit card and they wanted to cancel the one I had and give me a knew one. They told me their was a dollar charge from some company and they wanted to know if I ordered so****ing from the company I said no. I told the person I wanted to keep my card. They are also asking for the security number on the back and like a fool I gave it to them. I think now I will cancel my card and get a new one.

Someone repeatedly calls me during the day, at night, and on the weekends and will not leave a message when the call goes into voicemail... which tells me this is a solicitor! My number has been entered onto the "Do Not Call" list 2x. Somehow, telemarketers are STILL calling! How can I get them to stop????

On Dec 26th 2008 at 1:30 pm I received a call from a phone robot claiming to be Capital One Fraud department, claiming that there was fraud on my card. I was told to call this number 800-427-9428. When I called, the answering system claims that it was Capital One fraud department. I chose not to enter my credit card number but wanted to speak to someone. Rashid answered and wanted my CC #. I refused and asked him to verify that he was really Capital One. He promptly and abruptly ***g up.

Yes****ay I entered a complaint about this number. It turns out that I was entirely mistaken. It really is the Fraud Protection Department of Capital One and they were contacting me regarding a couple of possibly fraudulent charges. The whole matter has been resolved. Please cancel my complaint regarding 1-800-427-9428.

Phishing Scam calling themselves Capitol One Fraud Department...

As people say above, it seems legit. But I didn't trust previous commenters. [After all, this site could have been cleverly faked to allay su****ions of the usually paranoid.]But I called it and she asked for all the information someone would need to steal my card. I told her that I didn't feel comfortable giving the 3 digit "secret code" off the back. She said to call the number on the back of the card. Did so with the intent of calling Customer Service, but ended up at the Fraud Department without having to select it (just kept pressing "0" to speak to a real person).They verified a few transactions -- like for gas and breakfast at a Taco Cab**** Jeez, I know gas is high these days, but going on a weekend trip back home triggers a fraud alert?

This is a legit number. They called me to make sure that 2 charges on my cc were actually mine which they were. SO call them back just in case someone is trying to use your cc.

My message did state that they were from Capital One fraudline checking on recent activity.  I did call the number back but was afraid to give them any info so I called the number on the back of the card.  I did in fact have charges on my card I didn't make.  They removed the charges and are issuing a new card.I had this happen before, Chase called but that time the caller was someone trying to steal my CC number and iden***y.Always call the number on the back of your card to be safe.

It is Capital One and it is legit. But this is Cap One's fault. They should be better at identifying themselves. I didn't pick up when I didn't recognize the number. I called them back and they claimed to be Capital One's fraudline. They asked for my account number ( which I did not give) and then asked for my social (which a***n I refused to give). While the gentlement was cordial, all he would offer is "call the number on the back of my card." I then asked to speak to his supervisor. She too told me to call the number on the back of my card. When I asked her why she didn't know what that number was, she had no answer.  I called the number on the back of my card and sure enough, someone was trying to use my card. Fortunately they reversed the 400+_ charge, cancelled the card and reissued a new one.

Received phone msg at my IT office with an intro of a male voice stating just my name followed by the nicely recorded woman's voice for instruction to call the 800-427-9428 number. My office manager and I called the number and through the automated system, quickly verified two recent purchases; one being an expensive laptop and the other a computer mouse. Quick and painless. The office manager stated to me that this was routine and she tried to soothe my overly su****ious nature.

I am posting an update to my previous comment from the day before - I just got another call from the same number and this time a human was at the other end and was calling to verify a couple of my recent purchases made with my card and that was it. I guess this is a routine check they are ins***uting now.

I got this same call today and didn't answer. A message was left to call this number. I called Capitol One number on back of credit card and was transferred to Fraud Dept...Someone had charged about 10 items to my account. I cancelled card and they will issue a new one. This is a ligitimate number.

I received a phone call from 18004279428 and answered it. It was an automated caller asking me to hold for a representative. I was on hold for 2 minutes until I heard a message that if I could not continue to hold, to call 1-800-427-9428 at a later time. I ***g up. A few minutes later, I got another call from the same number. I answered, same automated caller, so I ***g up a***n. This time I tried calling the number back instead and got a busy signal. I've since tried calling the number and keep getting the same busy signal. I logged into my online account and the first few times couldn't get in, but tried a***n later in the day and got in fine. I guess I will wait for them to call me a***n, or try to call back another less busy time of day.

1-800-427-9428 is a legit number. I also got the voicemail to call regarding fraud, but instead I called the number on Cap One's website just to be safe. They did indeed say my card was being investigated by the fraud dept. and transferred me over.

Fraudulent Number populated on my cell phone....no one left a message....it is not validated on the Capital One Website either as a contact/customer service ID number....

I got a message that did not even say from Capital One, but from this forum, I called my Cap One card directly and asked if this was a legit call and phone number. it was, they just wanted to verify several purchases over the last week which were all legit.

I got email and voicemail from Capital One telling me to call this number for the fraud protection department to verify some charges. The person I reached was at Capital One and had access to my account records. The number is legitimate. But I told her that the fact that I cannot independently verify this number makes me feel uncomfortable.

Received two calls on a Sunday afternoon from 804-290-8550 saying it was Capital One customer fraud protection asking me to call 800-427-9428. Called 804-290-8550 it appears to be a legitimate Capital One number. Called the other number, it's an automated service that request your credit card number. I didn't enter it. I figure Capital One has all my info, it they want me bad enough they will find me.

I tried to make an online purchase with my capital one card and got declined (tried 3 times), then I got an e-mail from capital one stating there was fraudulent activity.  I researched the number listed in the e-mail (800-427-9428) and it is legit.  I called it and got things cleared up via several verification questions - only took a few minutes.

Got same call as above with same caller ID refering to capitol one fraud. Called capitol one on their main 800 number to be safe. They verified that number is legit, and wanted to verify some recent transactions.  Never did call that number directly though.

Received a message asking to call from 800-427-9428.  The caller Id showed the call coming from 804-290-8550. Called up 800-427-9428 and it said that I have reached the the capital one fraud****istance number and asked me to enter my credit card number. Did a reverse phone search on 804-290-8550 , its unlisted or a masked phone number.Will call up the customer serve number listed on CO webpage to check whats going on. online account looked in fine.

Received a message telling me to call this number 800-427-9428 back. The woman said she was from Capital One Fraud Protection. I didn't call but I checked my online account and everything looked in fine.
