We were out and received the message on our ma****e that we needed to call this # back. The caller ID shows "PRIVATE CALLER" with no identification at all. I was su****ious when the first thing you need to do is punch in a SS#. I am NOT about to do this when the person on the OTHER end won't identify themselves legitimately. In my opinion, IRS can contact us by mail - I don't give out information over the phone. The message left was that we MUST call this # before the close of the business day. I did NOT punch in info, instead punched "O" for operator and continued to get a recorded message that all agents were ******* - I held for one hour and gave up****uming this is a scam.

The phone number 800-829-3903 is the IRS. Specifically the CAWR unit (combined annual wage reporting). This is not spam and should be followed up with asap! You can also call the main IRS number 800-829-1040. You will need your EIN number / SS number. It is the IRS.

It is NOT an IRS # it is now where to be found on any OFFICAL phone list. It shows on a article that i can not find through the real IRS web site. Anyone that says they had problem resolved is a liar and in on the scam. The IRS will send you notice in the mail and then have you call them if there is a problem that the notice dosent resolve. They NEVER contact you over the phone.

I received one of these calls today and I called the IRS main # and it was a valid call. Still be weary of anyone who calls like this as the caller that called me did not Id themselves as from the IRS they just left a message with a call back number this number.

The IRS does not work on Sa****ay.  They also don't make phone calls....they send letters and ask you to call them.

It is actually VERY legit, but DO check first.  We got an email saying we had an "Outstanding Obligation" to the Dept of Treasury, and I KNEW we were current on everything from our current accountant and payroll company.  I read this site because I thought it was scam.  I phoned the IRS directly from their web site and did not use the number on the email.  Turns out (as we bid for government contracts) that the agency that hires US govt contractors gets notified if there are any outstanding taxes on their contractors accounts directly from the IRS IMMEDIATELY after paperwork is found to be incorrect.  We had no idea.  We had switched payroll companies in the middle of the year and the previous one underpaid one of our payroll forms by $257.  When I spoke with the IRS agent he said "How did you find out about this so soon? We would not have even notified you of this for a year!"  So, we got the email through the US Central Contractor Registration, and EVENTUALLY the IRS would have actually sent us a mailed notice.  So, lesson learned, even though the IRS would not contact you via email, others representatives you deal with might alert you so****ing is not right a whole lot earlier.  Go to the established site and contact the IRS directly to see if you really DO owe anything.  They tend to be behind time-wise quite a bit.  At least the guy was nice to me!

It is a legitimate IRS number.  It is a courtesy call from the collections department before they take action.

The IRS would never give you a one-day deadline to return a call.  They are required to give you sufficent notice to resolve any tax matter, adn would have already sent you a letter weeks before calling you.  The idea of the scam is not for you to call back, but to catch you when you answer the phone.  Leaving a legitimate phone number only builds your confidence, i.e. so****ing you can verify.  However, when you call the IRS you will get nowhere with the case number.  But you will get a phone call at another time from the scammer and may reveal information, now that you think the matter is legitimate.

I got the same message from this unknown caller telling me I had to call back immediately.  I'm thinking after reading all these post.  These people are giving the real number to the IRS but they are calling you from an unknown source. I do believe it's a scam.

I got a message and they wanted my SSN when I called too. Don't know if legit but su****ious. I waited on the phone for 40 minutes with no result.

I wondered whether this was a scam or not because they left a case number and the 800 number; however, when they didn't leave a company name I figured this was a scam. Because of the case number, I still was curious the legitimacy of the call.I never talked to any but they did leave a message; however, it was on my parent's home phone. I haven't lived there in over 25 years. Go figure. The lady said the same thing that I had to call back by COB that day. Fortunately for me my elderly mother didn't understand the message and get it to my until that evening. Also, in the middle of the message the lady s****s coughing while she is talking so part of the message is indiscernible. I just called the number. The automated message said it was the IRS and that they were closed (since this is Sa****ay). When no one provides a company name, I always get su****ious.I say AVOID PICKING UP or DON'T PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION.

Smart Guy gave you the accurate important info  - What people are'nt seeing is this; You are****uming that if you verify the 800-829-3903 as belonging to IRS, that the Phishing Scammer legitimately worked for, & called from there! Logic proved the wrong****umption! You're being targeted because the IRS published the fact that your'e in dispute with them-the call might seem logical- But every scammer, tax firm & tax accountant smells a financial opportunity, & thinks "Yummy, a Victim". The # IS a ***nch of the IRS that is set up to Levy your****ets- by this point you would know them & the issue!  RED FLAGS-The Scam girl... 1)Did'nt know my first name, asked me a few times to verify it. 2)Didn't volunteer her IRS ID# until pressed,her answer was only 6 digits long; highly unlikely. 3)Said that until I gave me personal info she couldn't pull my info up onscreen so that She could SEE what the call was about. Wouldn't you know your own job?3)complained that I was asking all the questions & she wanted her turn & 4)Huffed like a baby; "You'll see, check out the phone# on the internet, I'm for real, it's listed! Your Call-Back doesn't matter- its just to cover the scam with smoke & mirrors. She blew it unless they call a***n & you fall for it.  I could give you Donald Trumps number - it doesn't mean I've ever even met him nor represent him. WISE-UP & Trust your Instincts!   P.S.it's only a theory but 3 minutes before the call I recieved a solicitation call from the persistent so called "Tax Relief Agency" that is merely a recorded solicitation. I **** up quickly but I imagine they must ask you to call a number.  Reverse phone lookup locates it; 951-808-5767 as being from Corona CA, zip 92882 a couple blocks from E. Grand BLVD & Fullerton Ave -an Internet search turns up no tax firms in the area. You think they would advertise!   (although the unknown caller IRS scam undoubtedly originated from a cell phone) still, are they Related???  The timing was very su****ious. One wonders where the Boiler Room for the phishing scam originates.

I contacted this # due to a message left on a clients cell phone, giving 800-829-3903 & a case #.  I wouldn't share any info.  SS#, Name, DOB, or address.  I instructed IRS to contact the taxpayer by mailing.  In past seminars/training, I was instructed that the IRS does not make calls to you, unless it is contact from a field auditor specifically****igned to your account.  If it is legitimate, they will mail correspondence & you can deal with the IRS then.

Caller ID was:  UNKNOWN NAME, UNKNOWN NUMBER.....SAID the same thing....This is the Internal Revenue Service...you MUST call back today at 1-800-829-3903 between 8 AM and 8PM Monday through Friday...you MUST reference your call to case # 4--------and I couldn't make out any numbers at all past that.....when I call 1800 829-1040   the voices of the lady answerer sound the same, but there is NO WAY I will give my social to an UNKNOWN NAME< UNKNOWN NUMBER....I was told the IRS NEVER calls....when they need so****ing, I have always received letters through the mail.....Some of you say it's legitimate, but MORE of you think it's a SCAM....don't know on this one, so I will NOT respond at this time.....

Automated message from IRS?: urgent to call 800-829-3903 before close of business today, give the following long case number.  Called, pressed 1, 1, SS#, 2, etc. placed on hold (music) got an agent after 15-20 minutes, live voice asked for SS#, address, etc, said there is no problem, ignore it.  Called a***n, another agent said the same thing.  Called the IRS fraud number, got the exact same menu.  Called several IRS published numbers, all s****ed with the exact same menu and hold music.  800-829-3903 sounds like a legitimate IRS number, but the message sounds like phishing.

I got a message on my ma****e (03/19/09) saying that it was the IRS and that I needed to call back before 8:00pm that day.  I was given a long 10 digit reference case number, but my name was never mentioned with the message.  When I called back I had to key in my SSN.  When the operator picked up I was asked for the reference number but then was told nothing was in my file.  To make sure the operator asked for my SSN, name, and address. She stated a***n that everything looked good. After ****ing up I suddenly realized the possibility of this being a phishing scam.  I immediately called directy****istance to see if they could trace this number to the IRS.  They could not place this specific number, but told me that most of the IRS numbers begin with 800 829-****.  That is the only information that I have on this number.  I hope that it's legitmate.

this is the toll-free number for the IRS.  It is listed as on a recent letter I received.  Legit.

RED ALERT!!!They left me a voice message saying it is from IRS and a long reference number to be quoted when I call back at 800-829-3903.  The message also said that it is important for me to call back before end of day today.  This made me feel very suspecious.  #1, the caller ID was unknown,  #2 Communication from IRS on phone???  #3 Asking me to call back before EOD.I called IRS number 800-829-1040 and spoke with the IRS rep.  He confirmed that IRS would never call individuals on phone and leave messages.  I gave my SSN and had him check my account to see if there is any reason for IRS to call me and he said everything looks clean.This is clearly a phishing fraud.

Got a call on my cell on Tuesday evening after 6pm from a Mrs. ****ey of cleections.  Called the number back and got a John Bold.

We've received this same phone call multiple times over the past couple of years & once returned it out of curiosity. After pun****g in the reference number in an automated system the very first thing asked for is my husband's Social Security number. If legitimate that info is already on file with the IRS, it would be in the system under the reference number and there would be no reason for us to furnish the number. Normal protocol is to notify taxpayers via mail if they owe past taxes or have a problem with their tax forms.

this is an irs number. however, i was on hold twice for a long time, once over an hour, and never got to speak with a live person. i suggest calling another number listed at irs.gov

A lady called me from IRS - "Unknown" on the caller iD.  Wanted to know my SS#, mailing address, etc.  I said that I can't give it, but asked her ph #, ID # and case #.  She gave me both - ph #-800-829-3903 and case #.  I called this toll free # and it is a legit IRS office.  The real IRS person said that they do call people but don't ask for any personal info since they already have it on their screen.  Also the Case # that was given to me by the scammer did not mean anything to the IRS.  So people beware.  Don't give out any info over the phone.  Insist on contact only through mail.

This number is the IRS, they just have absolutely no customer service s****s and you are correct to think that there was so****ing fishy.  They present themselves very poorly.I wish I had just stayed on the line though, because calling back will require you to wait for hours, the first clue that it is indeed the real IRS.The IRS should make a note: "Do not call people demanding to know their social security numbers"  This is what scam artist do after all, isn't it?  You have to establish who you are, and maybe ask for part of a social security number (not the whole thing), after all, you are the one's behind a computer screen looking at it!

Got a call Tuesday night and lady left a message in my ma****e saying she is with IRS and to call the number 1(800)829-3903 and left a case number. I will call IRS myself and report this incident.

It is the IRS. The # is on their site. This is the number for monies owed, collections, and levies. They *****ed up my account and they did think i have money owed. We fixed it after an hour + on the phone. Legit number.

Received phone call on our business phone line at 9 pm on a Wednesday.  Caller gave his name as Dennis Wayne and said he was with the IRS.  In trying to get verification that the call really was from the IRS I asked Dennis to tell me our company's tax ID number.  He couldn't.

This looks legit ... the phone number appears in many places on the IRS website.
