THIS IS NOT A SCAM AND COULD HELP YOU FROM BEING SCAMMED. I returned this call today and the lady did ask for my social# I told her I was comfortable giving it and asked that she explain the reason for the call. She did so and told me she could look up the info with the number. I gave it to her and then she said it was for an account for a Pamela Sweeney, I told her I did not know anyone with that name and gave her my name (Initials A.D.) She removed my number from that persons account. This tells me someone probably got into my student records at college. This person thought they were slick. I know this because my moms initials are P.S. in fact her last name is Sweeney but her name is totally different from Pamela, however, my mom did co-sign on my student loan. So I guess they thought that if they used a name close enough they could be seen as on of her kids? Anyway they fouled up when they put my number, I called my mom and she said she knows no one by the name of Pamela and she never been to college a day in her life and she has no loans at all. So I was glad I called before they garnish my tax return as other are saying they can do. I can't afford to take any chances, there are scammers out there but these people will help you discover them.

The call is from U.S. Department of Education's Direct Loan Program. It is a legitimate number and not a scam! I had to call to get a Deference on my Student Loan.....

This is a completely legit number. I've been working with them on my loans for several years. They do not send mail because a) people ignore their mail b) people say "I never received that and c) people often move around (especially college students) and the mail doesn't get to them. Your name being on a do not call registry does not matter since this is a legitimate business. They have your SSN because it's your account number on your loans through the federal govt. They are required by their script the govt demands of them to ask for your SSN first thing. The govt is the one who came up with this silly way of answering the phone. They are contracted by the department of education. Even if you think YOU do not have loans, either someone put your name down as a reference (not necessarily financial, on my loans it asked for "someone who will always know where you live" as a way to contact me). Don't believe people who say they did not; most people filled out financial aid forms years ago by the time it gets to this company and don't even remember. It is also entirely possible w***ver had the phone number before you had the loans and they simply have an outdated number. Stop being so paranoid and look around a bit and find out info. Not everyone is out to get you. And file all the complaints you want, the govt laughs. This is a legit contracted company.

Spam call.

Its www.myedaccount.com calling. Most times it is because your past due on your student loans. Since they will take your tax return and garnish your wages if you have a student loan call them back. Sometimes they have a wrong number. Someone gave them a wrong number or someone typed it in wrong. Call them back. Give them your number. They will tell you who they are calling for and remove the number if you don't know them. Rarely they are calling because so****ing else has happened on your account. Like they got returned mail or your requested so****ing and they are giving you a follow up call. It's not a scam. They don't care if you ignore them because one way or another the government will get their money from you. But if you call them back you might be able to ask them to put a hold on your account and save yourself some major negative credit reporting.

Got a call from a robot saying they were Dept of Higher Ed and it was about my student records. To have my SSN and address ready. After a four minute wait they asked for SSN and I said, "NO way, I do not know who you are" so they wanted to see by my phone number what account this was for, fine they obviously had it anyway. Put me on hold five mintues but I ***g in there. Then they said it was a wrong number in their system and would take it off. People trying to gather SSN's and needs to be turned into the Attorney General's office.

Oh and I meant to add it was Loans Direct calling - legit

They called me with a prerecorded message saying my pay dates c****ed. Not sure why it required an automated phonecall rather than an email.

TheRECORDing (usually from "unknown #) keeps calling supposedly from the US Dept of Education. Bu­t when you call the # it's ""Di­rect Loan servicing"­;. I have no education loans/debt. ­ Called the # that finally showed up on my caller ID this time, they asked for SSN, but I gave them the phone # they'd been calling instead. They claimed they're calling for someone else who had this phone # years ago & they'll remove me...we'll see...

we keep getting these calls as well- we have called them back twice and the still keep calling- can they be sued??? They call almost everynight. same numbber to call back- 800-848-0981

I just had a message from the " U.S. Department of Education" saying that I needed to contact them at 1-800-848-0981 about a sutdent loan. Curio­sity got the better of me and I called. After the usual English/Spanis­h request and the mandatory "You may be recorded for quality" message I was connected to a person who immediately requested my social security number. I bluntly told her that I was not going to give that information until she could explain why they called since I haven't been in school for the last 25 years. Afte­r giving her my name and telephone number (figured it couldn't hurt anything) she bluntly told me that it was a incorrect telephone number and I wouldn't be called a***n. At that point I said thank you and ***g up on her.

Recording - Id unknown-- request to call about education account? Call the 800-848-0981 I called one time -no answer. In last months received at least a dozen calls. Have already reported one camplaint about two seperate calls.

These people ALWAYS call my house either really early in the morning, or really late at night. It is very annoying and I have no idea who they are. They call mulitple times a day! I am getting so sick of these calls.

As an account manager for a federal government agency, do you really think this is the appropriate place to respnd/post what you put here?  You need to be fired. No questions, fired. Really read what you put here!  Seriously!  Do you think this is appropriate?  Really?  Do you have any education?  Online degree maybe?  Any ethics cl*****? I don't think so. Called and asked for SS#--first thing. Said they didn't have any records of a loan after I gave them SS#. Maybe they are looking for delinquent loans? Hope this is not a scam.

Automated call 3 times a week for 2 months.  I called back and they asked for my social; i said sorry.  I explained that I receive this automated call repeatedly and asked what it was about - they said so****ing about student loans...I said "take my number off your list and send me a letter" - to that she said - "what is your last name sir..."I said "Sorry a***n, not giving you that, tell you what, look up my phone # that you keep calling..."She said "Sorry sir, I need your social or name to help you"I said "f*** off"   I don't give a s**t if this is the gov or not... I have not had student loans in 15 years and they have no business trying to 'do this business' over the phone - what happened to good ole US mail??????

I get several calls a day from this number, I don't answer the phone. Caller ID reads: TOLL FREE.

1800 848 0981 and 1800 848 0979 are both legit phone #'s, 1800 848 0984 is our fax #, 0979 is a direct line for general service questions for direct stafford, parent plus, grad plus and consolidated loans, 0979 is the number that is staffed longer during the day ie;8am to 12am est mon thru fri and 9 t0 530 on sat...{due to time zones} we do call from the 0979 for past due accounts, we also have a research team that attempts to get in contact w borrowers, and thier refrences, which is probably the reason for the call!!!...although sometimes our research department comes up with incorrect information {same name, same phone #, or even the same address... we can enter a phone #, address or name and come up with who has lived at your address for the past 30 years , same with your phone #, we can also tell your neighbors names!!! the biggest problem is that borrowers DO NOT PAY THIER BILLS!!! so we have to attempt to contact borrowers by using above research ****ods... THIS IS NOT A SCAM!!! when dishonest people do not pay thier bills it makes it hard for those who will borrow the money and actually pay it back... so for those of you who DO PAY YOUR student loans back, blame the ones who dont for your current 6.8 and 7.9% fixed intrest rates... works just like the health care system, our premiums are high for those wo go to the emergency rooms and not pay thier bills just to cop some hydrocodone or some percocets...so for those of you who are leary...DONT BE, and you dont have to give your ssn to us... it takes 7 to 10 business days to remove the number from our system, sometimes our research dept comes up with the same # that was already called, which is the reason for the repeat calls!!! WE ARE ONLY HUMAN, before you get irritated with any of my reps, remember they are just doing thier jobs, and its not an easy one... just a little insight as to why you may recieve these cals.............i hope you are all a little more aware as to the way the DIRECT LOANS program works!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i got a similar call from this number and it seemed su****ious; they asked for a lot of information right away. I was worried so I called the US Department of Education (1-800-USA-LEA­RN) and asked if the number was****ociated with their office and they told me that it is part of the direct loan service center.

Cryptic robocall about ""student records"". Claimed to be the Department of Education. Gave out a URL for a legitimate D of E website, but their phone number isn't on that site. When you call, they s**** fishing for your SSN right away. I have never had a student loan. This is clearly an iden***y theft scam.

I got a call on my cell phone from an Unavailable ID and the lady says she's from the department of education and gave me this phone number to call  800-848-0981 or 800-848-0891 (the young lady spoke rather quickly and I couldn't catch the last 4 but it's one of these) but when I go to the website that she provided me www.dl.ed.gov, it's a real website but I can't find anywhere on that site the number she gave me so to me it's a scam.  The department of education would've had the phone number on their website and the number from the robot call I got wasn't anywhere on the site, rendering this call a scam.  I do have one student loan but I'm currently paying it and just s****ed school so could that be a coincidence?  Not sure, but I'm not calling them back with my info.

I have received several calls from this company claiming to be US Dept of Education; need to talk about education loans, which I don't have. I have not contacted them and don't know how they got my home and cell number. Both are listed with the Do Not Call Registry. I plan to file a complaint. They have been calling twice a week or so for 4-6 weeks.

This number keeps calling us every day. We do not know who it may be and never leave messages. Can't speak to anyone to block this number or removed this number since they do not give that option. Hmmmm. They only call once a day though......

The 1800 848 0981 number is NOT a scam. I received a call from them today and I gave out all my information and they told me to disregard the call. I then got worried it was a scam because I was still in school and should not be getting calls from them until I am out and need to s**** making payments so I then looked off a direct loans paper I had and called a number off of it and I asked the lady about that number and she said it was their 24 hour number and that someone may put you under a contact person and they might call you even if you do not have a loan through them.

This is the Direct Loans Service Center Collections department. If you do not have loans out you may know someone who has used you as a reference.

Keep getting calls all the time, day & night from US Direct Loan Service & have the same problem as Mr. Lamay. This needs to stop.

For the past six months the Direct Loan Service Center has left messages, sometime daily on my phone to call 1-800-848-0981 for important info. I am unable to make them quit calling because I have no account with them and they cannot look me up by my phone number that they are calling. My social security number is not on their system and I cannot block and 800 number.

I have received several calls from this same company talking about education loans. I don't have loans so I don't need to contact them to review them. I don't know how they got my number but they call every week or so.

I s****ed receiving messages from the U.S. Department of Education Direct Loan Servicing Center this week.  It's been many years since I've had a student loan.  I called 800-848-0981 and told the woman who answered that I believed they called me in error.  She was very polite and did not ask for my SSN or any other personal information.  She did ask for my phone number and offered to remove the number from their system.

The company that is calling you IS bogus. They have a number similar to the actual USDoE, but they are not them. No legit company would immediately ask for a SSN without even introducing themselves.Reported to the FTC also.

yah... their real. . I had moved and they got returned mail from the place i was at and called me to get new address. I just don't understand why they don't tell you anything except "can i have your ss number".

I got a call from the 800-848-0981 number about my parent PLUS loan, which was past due. I didn't call that number but went direct to dl.ed.gov (which is the federal student aid website) and got a number there, 800-848-0979. I called that number and the person who answered could not have been nicer. The 0981 number is listed on a number of sites as the number for the collections department for the Direct Loan servicing center. So I think it's legit although apparently they also call the numbers people given as references on student loan forms, so those people who don't have loans or have paid them off years ago may be getting calls because they're listed as references on someone else's application.

They called our business and left a message claiming to be from the Dept of Education calling about our "student records."  It's been over 25 years since I had student records. :)  They also gave a website www.dl.ed.gov ... which doesn't exist.  I have filed a complaint with the FTC.

I received the call at almost midnight EST (crazy indicator). Thanks to this site and the OKhighered site, I was able to make a complaint with the FTC. Thanks.

Just got a call. They call sometimes three times a day.

Legitimate, I doubt it... The 800 number does not belong to the Gov't. Belongs to a company that suposedly provides call center and disaster recovery services. Anyone you speak to at that number would not be a government employee. I called them back, gave them my daughters name, told them they called me and should have any other info they would need to find her "account". They ***g up. So, my opinion is that this is not legitimate, is fraudulent and should be reported to the authorities. 1) Even if they are calling on behalf of the DOE, they should not be misrepresenting themselves as Governmant employees. They work for a private firm.2) If they are calling us they should be able to search their database, if they really have one, by name as well as SSN.3) My daughter just took out a loan last summer and is still a student. So there should not be any "collection activity".4) I never received any kind of paper communication, only a phone call requesting a SSN. 5) I searched the company on the internet. There is only one person on the Board of Directors and in the executive profiles section. The company appears to be in Chapter 11 proceedings.

It is a legit number.I talked to someone about my account,and applied a forbearance to my account. Afterwards I checked my account online And the forbearance had been applied.

Woman from this number left voice message regarding student loan.  We have none.  Called number back and woman immediately wanted SSN information.  Sounds bogus.  Phishing complaint forwarded to Feds through hotline.

They are legit.  I just got a call from this number and called back and didn't even speak to anyone.I then called the Federal Student Loan board (a number I got right from their official website) and asked them for the Student Loan/Dept. of Education number.  They told me 800-848-0979.I called that number and spoke to someone.The problem isn't that the number(s) given aren't legit.  It's that it's shady.  It's just another example of government systems failing to properly communicate with the citizenry in a comforting way.  It's really absurd to ask for a social security number without really identifying yourself.Anyway, it's really the Department of Education/Student Loan service calling.

I received a call from this number today (12/03/07); the caller identified himself as an employee (name, LaMar) at the Department of Education.  He said he wanted to verify my son's address and went on to give me the former address of my son.  When I told him it was wrong, but would not give him an updated address, he asked that I ask my son to call him at 1-800-848-0981.  He reemphasized that he was calling from the Department of Education and my son should give the information to whomever took the call at the 800 number.

I just got a phone call and it was for my brother about his student loan that he doesnt have. The woman was very rude when I told her this number is on a don't call list. She told me it isnt my business because the phone call was not for me.

Got the call yes****ay, they left part of an automated message because I didnt' answer the call.  Listened to the message, and decided to call it back for curiosity.  The man who answered didn't even introduce himself and said "social security number please" ... I said "you called me, I am not that ******, I don't have a loan, bye" and ***g up the phone.****** people.  I hope that someone doesn't get caught up in it.
