Leave a CommentSomeone was trying to use my account to buy a Dell computer
I received a letter from WebBank C/O Dell Financial Services indicating that a revolving credit application in my name had been declined due to a freeze on my credit report at Experian. I called the number given which was answered by a person with a foreign accent saying "Dell Financial Services". I explained the reason for the call and advised that it was a fraudulent application. He put me on hold while he pulled the account and advised that he was sending a report to Experian to remove the credit inquiry (credit inquiries can lower one's credit score). He also advised that a member of the security investigation team would call me after the investigation was complete. I asked for any additional information used in the application that might give me a clue about how my information had been obtained. He said the only information he had available was the date the application was made. The date he gave me was the same date on the form letter I had gotten from WebBank/Dell. He then recommended that I call the credit agency to report the fraud as well. On balance, it appears that this is a legitimate number belonging to Dell. No inquiries were made by him for further information about me, other than a phone number they could use to report the result of their investigation. No request for SSN or address, etc.
Received 2 calls from this phone number claiming to be "Dell Computer Company's Credit Card Finacial Services". They asked for my daughter by name, and I told them she is on a trip with a friend, and I then asked if I could take a message. They said they needed to verify if she had filled out an online credit application with Dell. They gave me a their name, phone number, and a reference number for my daughter to use when she calls. I called my daughter and she said she had not applied for anything on the internet and does'nt even have access to a computer where she's at. I told the caller that I am certain she did not fill out a credit app. with Dell because she has a fairly new Toshiba computer. They said that someone might be attempting fraud with her information and I should call her to let her know about this so she can notify her bank and others. I am now wondering if the call we received from this number is Dell and is legitimate.
You guys are dumb, Dell's legitimate financial services # is 866-228-9620.
since the person i spoke with did not have good English s****s...so i thought he said so****ing about financial services and i****umed it to be for college since i am working on that right now. When he asked for my SS #, i gave it to him, so i am wondering if they are professional DELL representatives and not a scam right? I am so worried right now...please answer me
I got a letter claiming to be from Dell Financial Services stating that an order had been placed on my preferred account, and that several unsuccessful attempts to contact me have been made and asking me to call this number (866-228-9620) to verify my information. I received no such "unsuccessful contact attempts."Naturally I found this su****ious so I called Dell Financial Services directly at 800-283-2210 (this number can be found on their official website www.dell.com). The person I spoke with confirmed that 866-228-9620 is a number for their internal verification department and transferred me there, where the lady I spoke with told me that the "An order has been placed on your account, please call us to verify or your order may be canceled" letter is a standard letter that is routinely mailed out to people with information on file. Her exact words were "whether an order has been made or not, this is just so****ing we do to get people to call and verify their information so we can prevent iden***y theft."So yes- very, very shady business practice, scare tactics, but hopefully the knowledge that this is indeed a Dell Financial Services number will put some people's minds at ease. I had a very stressful night/morning over this so hopefully this will help some people.I'm not sure about the legitimacy of RECEIVING calls from this number, however. If you receive any su****ious contact from Dell, via phone or mail, it is probably best to call them back directly at either 800-283-2210 (Dell Financial Services) or 800-WWW-DELL and try to verify your su****ions that way.
Same ****. Just got off the phone with a woman who who cliamed to be from DELL's financial services department. She was trying to verify if I had applied for credit with them. I told her that I not only did not apply for credit, but I NEVER give out this cell phone number to people who I don't know. I insisted that she tell me where she got it. She told me that she was trying to prevent iden***y theft and that she needed to know if I had applied for credit. The whole thing STUNK form the get go so I kept her on the phone. I asked her what other information she had of mine. She didn't respond. I said that in order to prevent ID theft, I should be made aware of what other information she had. I asked if she knew my first name, she said she did because I used it to identify myself when I answered the phone. I asked if she had my last name - she did. She claims to not of had any other info. I asked her for her name and she said Tess. I asked for her last name. Silence. I said that I knew that DELL used employee numbers (I was bluffing). She said hers was 390053. She recited it very quickly and I had to ask her to repeat it twice. I asked what kind of credit was being sought, she didn't know, her job was only to check off "yes" if I say that I had applied, or "no" if I didn't. I asked if I could speak to her supervisor, she said yes and put me on hold for about 3 minutes after which time she got back on the phone and said that the Supervisor would have to call me back because she "couldn't transfer an outgoing call". I asked where she was calling from, she said Texas - Fort Worth. I asked her if the job market in Fort Worth was so bad that she had to work calling people on a Sunday night to try deceive them into giving out personal information. She said she understands my concern and a supervisor would be calling me back -- Can't wait to get a hold of this jack***.
got a call from 866-228-9620. a pleasant american sounding gentleman told me that he was from dell computer credit. he told me that someone applied for credit using my information. he needed the last four digits of my SS#. when i objected he said it was no big deal because he already has my name and phone number anyway and giving him just the last four digits of my SS# was no big deal. i still objected. he gave me the phone number to experian to put an alert on my credit report. i suspect this is merely a continuation of the con.
Received a message from 1-866-228-9620 claiming to be Dell Financial services/Verification Dept Claiming they had an order from me. I ignored it figuring it was some kind of scam but then 2 days letter received another call from 1-800-456-3355. Called back and got through to a woman who informed me that I had ordered a digital camera. She then asked me for my Soc security #. I of course laughed at her and told her that Dell or any legitimate business would never ask for SS# over the phone and ***g up.
They claim to be Dell computer company credit dept and said someone ordered a computer on my account and wanted to comfirm the purchase of it. We have no computer account with Dell and they said they would send me a form to fill out for the police dept to fill out. Hopeflly Dell computer knows about this # calling claiming to be Dell Computer Company
I got the call on Monday and I ordered 2 new computers on that weekend. I returned call and got disconnected while waiting. Claimed to be DFS.
They may be calling because someone has placed an unauthorized order using your iden***y, and they are trying to verify if the order is fraudulent.
Yep, it's fraud, phishing for personal information.
I acutally got a letter in the mail (dated 3/20/08) that said I had ordered so****ing and my order was currently on hold. Dell had been trying to reach me (most likely on my home phone, but since i never answer it, I guess i never got their call) and they weren't going to send me my order until i called to confirm it. I was su****ious about the letter to begin with, especially since I KNOW I didn't order anything, and when I called the #, its rose my suspisions even more. I have NEVER called ANY finance company and acutally had someone pick up the phone without going through a menu of prompts and inputs first. Then the guy that answered went right into his script about needing to verify information withhout so much as asking me my name or account #, definetly a scam.
CALLED DELL, THEY TRIED TO CALL THE # AND SAID IT WAS A NON-WORKING #. I CALLED IT BACK AND AFTER IT BEEPED AND CYCLED TWICE SOMEONE ANSWERED. I TOLD THEM IF THEY EVERY CALLED A***N I WOULD COME AFTER THEM AND HE ***G UP. THIS IS PROBABLY A SCAM.
Hard to understand. Seems like a scam to me.
phishing scam! claims to be dell. looking for personal info!
