Leave a CommentSame thing. We are in San Diego. We have been getting calls for a year now asking about our move (we're not moving). East Indain accent with boiler-room noise & voices in the background. Caller said she was from "The State of California Business Development Office." No such thing, as far as I know. I asked her if that was a "real" government agency, and she just stated the name a***n.
I received a call from 800-247-4047 from a woman named Anne with a very strong Indian accent. I asked her to repeat where she was calling from and she said The State of California Business Development Office and she asked to verify my business address. I informed her that I do not verify any information over the phone and asked for her employee ID number. She said she was in a confidential department, yeah right! So I told her I would be contacting the state to find out if this "department" really existed and if not I would report her to the authorities. She ***g up on me. I have had very ****** employees in the past who verify our address then you get charges anywhere from $9.99 to $49.99 on your phone bill every month and they just hope that your business is so big you won't notice, which we didn't until the economy turned around and we had to cut costs. Once they get you to verify your address they record you and say that is their authorization. The phone company will stop charging you but they will not refund the money. You have to jump through hoops to get it done too. The authorities don't do anything about it either. Be careful.
Same in California. Person speaking was a woman in her late forties to late fifties, heavy smoker and probably drinker. The number given was 415 736 7000. I attempted to give this over to the DA's office, where I have friends, but they can't take it until someone has actually been harmed. I cannot access my Caller ID. We received the same call previously from a Florida number, which my friend was able to trace to a trailer park.Isn't there some Govt office that handles this stuff? I'd think it's a felony to impersonate a state official.
A supposed State of California Business Development Office representative asked if we were moving or expanding our business this year. I told her we were a non profit and she still asked if we were moving. I wrote the number down, and called it back, I got a Los Angeles based law firm who handles Bankruptcy.
guy with heavy accent, claimed to be from state of illinois business services dept. I asked him why he had an out of state phone #, he claimed to be in winnetka. when he s****ed asking questions, I ***g up on him.Illiinois att'y generals office said unless i'd sent them money or given out personal info.... nothing they can do.
We received a call from this number, asking if our business was moving. The caller (with a strong Indian accent), said he was from the Illinois Department of Revenue. When asked additional questions, the caller ***g up.

We got a similar call, from a Kevin. Our caller ID was not functioning so I could not verify the number. I asked a lot of questions, how they'd heard of us, why the state would need this, and eventually they ***g up. They seemed to be trying to verify whether our business address is a permanent one. This seemed fishy, as we've been here for more than 6 years, so****ing the state would know from its tax records.
Similar to above - received call from "The Ontario Business Development department". "Kevin" asked me for some information about my company, but when asked why his "government agency" was calling from the 210 area code, he ***g up... big surprise there...
11:50 28 Feb - another call from this number - same spiel - this is Kevin from the Ontario Business Development Office - are you moving - confirming address - etc. When I questioned the caller's location, it was reported to be in Southwestern Ontario. As soon as I indicated that we had had this conversation before, the line went dead.
I also received a call from 1-210-249-8808. The conversation s****ed with a "I understand you guys are moving, is your permanent address ...." giving my correct address. When questioned more, I was told that the called (also East Indian in accent) worked for Ontario Business Development and just wanted to confirm that we were moving. When I questioned more about where he/she had heard that we were moving I was told that it had been flagged as a move. When I asked to get the caller's phone number and I would return the call with the info, funny, the line went dead. When I called the 1-210-249-8808 back I also got the Sprint mail centre.
The caller said her name was Samantha Collins, and she was calling to update our business information. She wanted to know how many employees we had, where we were located, and other operating information. I asked her what company she was with. She said she work for the State of California. I didn't believe her, there was a lot of background noise, and she had a strong Indian accent (there are a lot of call centers based in India) so I asked her what department she worked for and what was their website. She told me that she was with the Business Development Department and to just go the general state website to find their information. As I was talking to her I looked up the area code and found that it was based in San Antonio, Texas. So I asked her where her office was based out of she told me San Francisco. She must have gotten annoyed with my questions because she ***g up on me. I called the number back and it went to Sprint PCS voicemail. She then called me back and wanted to try to get the information, a***n. I told her she was commiting fraud by representing herself as a state employee and trying to solicit information. I asked her why her phone number was based in Texas when she said her office was based in San Francisco. She said because I'm moving from Texas. I told her last time I checked the state didn't have employees use their personal phones to call businesses. I told her that I would be reporting her, she then ***g up on me a***n. I called the State of California's Business, Transportation and Housing Department (this would be the agency over the department she said she was with). They verified that they had no such department, and that I should call local law enforcement. The local law enforcement said that it is not fruad until you actually give them your information, so there was nothing they could do. Just be advised not to give anybody any information even if they claim to be with the government!!!
