When you answer, pretend to be someone's caretaker or child.  "No, I'm his social worker", "No, I'm her meals on wheels rep".  When they ask if X is there, say "Yes", then just pause on the phone.  The point is to tie their time up, which they could be using to call other people for solicitations.  They've already wasted your time, why not make them suffer, too?

I won't answer calls where they just put "Maryland" in their caller ID info. I suspect this is a for-profit company doing fundraising.When they get my answering ma****e, they just **** up. When they call back, I just yelled "stop calling this number!"I haven't gotten anymore calls from this number since, but I have gotten several calls from other unidentified numbers in the last 4 days that just **** up so I suspect this is the season for for-profit fundraisers. (I won't donate as they take a huge cut for themselves, leaving little for the charity itself! Better to send directly to the charity or give to Salvation Army - they have very little admin. costs.)
