Beware Fake Debt Collection AgenciesBogus debt collection agencies, online dating chat robots, and an "Energy Department refund": Internet ScamBusters™ #263Before we tell you about today's three Snippets, we wanted to draw your attention to Snippet #2, because it is part of a whole new class of scams that we think will grow exponentially over the next year.Although this scam will most likely not hit countries other than Russia until February, be sure you check it out -- even if you never visit online dating sites. That's because although this scam is s****ing via online dating, it will soon move to other venues.Today's Snippets are: - Beware Fake Debt Collection Agencies - A New Type of Scam: Online Dating Bots Flirt Via Chat - New Scam Notifies People of "Energy Department Refund" But first, we urge you to take a look at these top articles from our other websites:New Year's Resolutions For Iden***y Theft Prevention: Quick and easy ways to have iden***y theft prevention tools in place for the new year. How Savvy Consumers Get Services For Half Price or Less: Save money on services with these innovative ideas.Has Your Credit Card Company Helped You Lately? Practical tips to get you through winter storms that you should do now.And now for today's Snippets...Beware Fake Debt Collection AgenciesAside from vampires, werewolves and zombies, debt collectors are a**** the scariest creatures ever conjured by the human mind. Just kidding -- sort of.We say "sort of" because some scammers are using people's fear of being labeled "deadbeats" to extort money from honest, creditworthy consumers.Posing as a collection agency representative, the con artist will contact a victim by mail, email or telephone, claiming the person owes a specific dollar amount to a particular company. To convince victims to wire money to pay the "delinquent accounts," scammers will threaten to report "overdue bills" to credit bureaus, take some form of legal action or even drain money from victims' bank accounts without their consent.Ironically, real "deadbeats" probably wouldn't fall for this scam, since they have no intention of repaying their creditors. But u****ht citizens may doubt themselves, thinking they've forgotten to pay a bill. And, because the sums involved tend to be fairly small, some people may be tempted to just pay the "bill" and "get it over with."Do NOT "pay off" these scammers!
A typical collection agency fraud A deception used to induce a supplier to sell. In a fraud, the debtor has no intention of repaying debt. works this way: An agency contacts and solicits collection business from a credit The privilege of buying goods, services or borrowing money in return for a promise of future payment. manager, often at unusually low collection rates. A fee structure is agreed upon, and the credit manager places one or more accounts with the collection agency, and the collection agency contacts debtors go about collecting the balance due --- just as any other collection agency would do.However, the collection agency does not pay the creditor A person, business or governmental agency with a claim A right to payment or other equitable remedy in the event of a breach of contract. a***nst a debtor or debtor's business. clai A right to payment or other equitable remedy Relates to the judicial means or court procedures by which legal and equitable rights are enforced. in the event of a breach of contract. m a***nst a debtor or debtor's business. based on payments received from the debtor or business en***y that owes money. . Instead, the collection agency pockets the money A medium of exc****e; coined or stamped currency. . The beauty of this scam is its simplicity. Creditors normally trust their collection agency to act in their best interest Compensation for the use of money. . These scams often come to light only when the debtor contacts the creditor and asks to re-establish a relationship and is told the debt must be repaid before any consideration will be given to re-establishing a business relationship. When the debtor tells the creditor the debt has been paid, things s**** to get interesting.Typically, the creditor contacts the agency and: * The agency denies receiving payment * The agency is out of business or has moved, orThe agency admits receiving the money but due to a clerical error, they were unable to determine which of their clients was owed the money. In any of these scenarios, if your collection agency does not immediately disgorge the payments it has received then the creditor must pursue payment as they would with any other delinquent debtor.Ironically, the credit manager may never learn that the debt has been repaid, and without this information there is no reason to question the collection agency about the status of payment. One final note: A collection agency can also defraud creditors by failing to remit collected payments promptly - this earning interest on your company's money. Your contract with the collection agency should always specify the ****mum amount of time the agency may hold onto your money before issuing payment - as well as the penalties for failing to send payments on time.

Don't fall for their scams.
Been getting a call from this number what seems like over a year now. Person they ask for doesn't live here. I don't pay any attention and just erase it from my answering ma****e. I am getting tired of this. What ever happen to the Do Not Call list?
This # calls 2-3 times per week with a recorded Austrilian type accent leaving a message that its an important call for someone by the name of Erica. They leave a message and a return # of 800-938-8000 but the # they are calling from is 336-358-4900- I called this # and spoke to a lady today for the 20th time and she promised me that I would be removed from their phone list but would not identify who she was---I have placed my cell # with the government's do not call list but this must be a joke as well cause it does not stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-336-358-4900mark litrell, a debt collector?
In the last year I have received well over 300 calls from ******s like these. I have written down roughly 60 different numbers that they use. They are usually Credit Card interest rate scammers, Auto warranty scammers, or "debt collection" calls for some unknown persons. I am on the State and National Do Not Call registries (for 3 years). I have reported these numbers to the DNC folks 3 times. I have reported them to the FCC 2 times. I sent a complaint the Tx. ATT. General 1 time. I still get the calls at least once a day ( I got exactly 5 this week). They just c****e phone numbers and continue "business" as usual.
I just got a call from 336-558-4900. They left no message this time. The call before this they left a message with a reference number telling me that this is not a sales call. They don't say who they are or where they are calling from. What can be done about this??
Got another call a***n from this company. Over the last 2 weeks they have called over 30 times!! They are not actually a collection agency, rather they purchase old debt as a settlement to a company and attemp to collect on it to turn a profit. I called the company that they say I owe and the company agreed that I do not owe them any money. They are calling my sisters house and her cell phone because at one time we did live together, 4 years ago. Also they are asking for my maiden name, been married 8 years now, they are rude and refuse to stop calling her numbers and they personally insulted me when I returned the call. He told me that I was uneducated, and lazy, and worthless a**** several other comments the call lasted 8 1/2 minutes. I told him that I am not able to work due to an injury and he said that he has a family too, and how ignorant of me to ask him to stop calling me since I won't make payment on this old debt.............The debt is from 2004............... When I asked him his name he rudly ***g up on me. So I called the company he stated that I owed and they said my account was paid in full, I called them back and he asked me how I intended to pay this debt? What??? Did you hear what I just said, I called the company you just told me that I owe and they said I am paid in full and why should I pay a***n? He a***n insisted that I owe $227.97 and how would I like to pay it? I had finally had enough of this unprofessional ignorant person and had to **** up the phone. Also in an earlier phone call a couple days ago When I questioned the hours of calling they stated that they are allowed to call from 8am to 9pm. They call on weekends too! I will be contacting the better business bureau!

I have gotten 3 calls from this number. They claim to be a collection agency and say I owe so****ing from an old cell phone account. I still have an account with the same cell phone company, just a different number. The guy wanted me to give him my credit card number over the phone to pay the debt. I didn't think I owed anything and told him so. He got really hateful then and I got su****ious. I called the company the supposed debt is owed to and they said all of my accounts are paid and up to date. They suggested this was fraud.
When they call it is a recording and I still do not know why they are callingme.
