Received many calls trying to see me on retiring there

They are from SafeWay, and th ey called me about a bounce check that I wrote to them a month ago. The lady was very nice and worked with me. Once I made a payment to them, the calls stopped.

DB Person calling said his name was Garret Shaw and he was from the AZ Republic.  If this is a scam, then how did he get this number, because this is the number the AZ Republic has on file for newspaper delivery.
