This is often used by scammers to check if a number is active and could be a target for further attempts.

I had an ad on craigslist and received a text Offering to buy my vending route. Obviously you cannot ship a vending route but this text says that they will gladly send a shipper to pick it up. So these people are obviously scammers! I had fun playing with them back & forth for a while. I gave them wrong information and wrong address etc.
