Andrea a friend emailed this to everyone he knew..FYI Link to IRS website talking about the scam. http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams I have spoken with several of you already about a scam that was directed at me yes****ay. It is a harrowing experience that I don’t want any of you to have to go through. I received a warning call from the IRS that I had been audited and found to be in violation of laws and was being charged with fraud. I only caught the last part of the message on the recoding, so I called to find out what it was about. DON’T DO THAT (advice #1) The call was from a non-800 number. In specific, it was 718-487-9738, although I am sure there are many. DO NOT CALL BACK on the number supplied. Once you are in contact with them you are trapped. When I contacted them, they s****ed reading me the charges a***nst me. The man introduced himself and gave his IRS badge number. Threats were made that were very severe and hard to simply ignore. Information (i.e. what exactly did I do wrong) is withheld and repe***ive threats about the consequences are made. I was told that two attempts to discuss with me had been made through personal visits to my home but no one was home. I was told that if I agreed to settle that day, all charges would be dropped. If I chose to fight legally, warrants would be issued for my arrest and my accounts would all be frozen. At this point, and throughout the ordeal, I was: · Skeptical (does the IRS really act like this?). Why wasn’t I sent written correspondence? · Scared. The threats are severe and would be implemented immediately. · Angry. This can’t be proper protocol I was asked for my cell phone number (no other information was requested – if it is do not supply it. It would all be on the do***ents they already have) While still on the phone (landline) with the “agent”, my cell phone was called with the calling number being the legitimate 800# for the IRS. I was asked to confirm by calling that same number, which is indeed the IRS number. They supply very little information and make continued threats. All numbers (they also called me from the real Chicago Police number after I stopped cooperating) are real but are somehow manipulated within the calling process to be misrepresented at the real phone numbers. Rather than going to the bank as they required me to do, I went to the IRS office. By that time, there had been enough red flags for my skepticism to overwhelm the fear they impose so I was confident to report it rather than comply any further. · The best advice I can give is to avoid getting on the call in the first place. DO NOT call them back and do not answer a phone number you don’t recognize. · If you want to check on validity, call the IRS office directly to check on your status. · The IRS do***entation I received upon rea****g the office identified that the IRS does not make threats. They send written communication first and follow legal guidelines for any prosecution. I feel a bit embarrassed that I let it go so far, but if you hear the extent of the threats, it is hard to simply **** up.
JM Received a phone message from 713-701-9932 claiming that the IRS was filing a lawsuit and to call that number to get more information. I knew immediately it was a scam as no one especially the IRS would use the phone to inform someone that they were the target of an impending lawsuit.
